The chief complaint on this machine is that it runs WAY too hot, especially under your hands, and the fans are always screaming. I'm typing this on the laptop post-fix - idling at 33C, maxing out at 77C under load, all cores relatively even. I then gave the heatsink a nice even coat. I was able to take some from the pond surrounding the die, spread it evenly, and clean up the spillage. Luckily, ASUS provided enough LM here for about seventeen CPU dies, as you can see. It looks like no LM even touched that spot, save for the bit of residue that squeezed its way over. Notice the massive gap in the center on both the die and the heatsink. And what do I find instead? The single worst liquid metal application I've ever seen on anything, ever.Īnd before you point out the possibility that I twisted the heatsink pulling it off (I didn't, as you can tell by the uniform thermal paste on the capacitors above the CPU), here is what the application looked like on the heat plate. So I do what I always do with a new laptop - take off the heatsink assembly and re-paste. I open her up to find a rather beefy cooling solution. The rest were warm, but weren't breaking 80C. Even more odd, the same two cores and the package temps were the only ones spiking.

I notice that just running Windows Updates, the CPU temp is spiking into the high 90s and the fans are jacked. Lots of great hardware for the price, and I'm a fan of the new "refined" ROG design. I purchased this laptop yesterday because I needed something powerful enough to work on, but also to take some Cyberpunk breaks throughout the day. But, man, the process has to be further refined. Which is cool! ASUS is bragging about being the first company to automate adding LM to CPUs. I'm referring specifically to this laptop with this post, but according to ASUS any 2020 ROG laptop had liquid metal applied to the CPU die out of the factory. This post is just a recommendation, not a conclusion. But, Occam's Razor tells me that if the first line of mainstream laptops to use LM out of the factory are consistently scoring near the bottom of thermal performance, there is the possibility of a more widespread issue with LM application.
